Owen, Green heroics seal thrilling win as Australia take 1-0 lead
Ben Dwarshuis Was On Fire 🔥
Ben Dwarshuis had a great day with the ball, taking four wickets. That means he got four batters out, which is a big deal in a T20 match!
Fraser-McGurk Struggles Again 😕
People were already a little surprised when Australia picked Fraser-McGurk to replace injured players like Spencer Johnson and Matt Short. He was even put in the team to open the batting — which means he was one of the first two batters to play. But sadly, he didn’t do well. He only scored 2 runs from 7 balls and then hit the ball straight to a fielder off Jason Holder and got out. Not a great day for him.
Marsh Swings Big, Then Falls 😬
Mitchell Marsh, the captain, came in and played very aggressively. He hit three massive sixes, but also had seven dot balls (balls where he didn’t score anything) during the powerplay. Then, Alzarri Joseph bowled a super fast delivery, and Marsh just got a tiny edge on it — the ball was caught, and he was out.
Green Fights Back 💪
Cameron Green didn’t back down. He tried hitting back hard. One shot even accidentally went for a six after hitting the edge of his bat. Then, Joseph bowled a bouncer that hit Green on the shoulder — OUCH! But Green didn't give up. He smashed two sixes over fine leg to finish the powerplay in style.
Australia in Trouble Again 😟
Australia was still in a tough spot when Josh Inglis tried to hit a shot but instead top-edged it — meaning the ball went straight up and was easily caught by a fielder. Then Glenn Maxwell, who wasn’t having a good day, hit the ball straight up in the air and got out too, scoring only 11 runs from 10 balls.
Green and Owen Save the Day 🦸♂️🦸♂️
Things were not looking good, but then came the match-saving partnership between Green and Mitchell Owen.
Neither of them had much experience finishing games in the middle order, but they played like pros!
Owen started strong — he hit a six on his very first ball off Andre Russell and then hit another one later in the same over! He wasn’t scared at all. In the 12th over, he hit three sixes off Akeal Hosein, which proved he could handle spin bowling too.
At the other end, Green played smartly. He didn’t take big risks — instead, he kept the scoreboard ticking with some twos and singles. Then, he decided it was time to attack again, and hit big shots off Holder and Motie, reaching 50 runs from just 25 balls. He helped bring the target down to only 32 runs needed from 31 balls.
But then, Green tried to hit a massive shot again and got out.
Owen Keeps Going… But Falls Too 😔
Owen didn’t stop though. He smashed a huge six off Joseph to reach his half-century (50 runs) from 26 balls. But just like Green, he also got out on the very next ball while trying to hit another big one. At that point, Australia still needed 15 more runs from 21 balls.
Close Finish – But Australia Wins! 🏆
Now, it was up to the lower-order batters: Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, and Sean Abbott.
They didn’t score fast, but they kept things calm and steady. West Indies also helped a bit — their substitute fielder Jewel Andrew dropped a catch at fine leg, which could have changed the match. That catch was off Sean Abbott, and only 7 runs were needed at that point.
Abbott also almost got run out, but they managed to stay in the game. Slowly and carefully, the Australian players scored the last few runs and won the match with 7 balls left.
